SIUE Special Presentation At MSCC ( 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm )

Main Street Community Center will host Experiences and Research in the Occupied Palestinian Territories from 7-8 pm on April 22, 2014.  The program will be presented by Tyler Urish, Rob Wann and Charmaine Burrus, SIUE students.  In December 2013 the three students traveled alongside Drs. Laurie Rice and Denise DeGarmo on a research trip to the West Bank.  Join us as the tree students discuss their experiences and research while under occupation.  These presentations are in partnership with the SIUE Office of Educational Outreach and are open to the public.

Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Program

Paralegal assistance is offered monthly at Main Street Community Center for seniors and the disabled in the greater Edwardsville area through a partnership with the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Program.  Recipients are able to receive assistance with advance directives, simple wills, and other legal matters.  Exclusions of criminal and other matters apply.  The next date for appointments is Wednesday April 23 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.  To make an appointment, contact the Community Center:  656-0300 or email.

Dialogue With An SIUE Professor At MSCC ( 9:30 am - 10:30 am )

Prehistoric Cave Paintings in France and Spain

On Thursday, April 24 from 9:30-10:30am, Jeffrey Skoblow, Professor, English Language & Literature, will present Prehistoric Cave Paintings in France and Spain.  Following a brief background talk on human evolution, focusing on the settlement of Europe during the Paleolithic, Dr. Skoblow will show slides of cave paintings from that period, specifically from two of the most spectacular sites in France – the caves of Lascaux (with images created about 17,000 years ago) and Chauvet (about 32,000 years ago)-discussing what we know and do not know about the images and the people that made them.  He will also discuss the possibilities for visiting such sites in southern France and northern Spain (though both Lascaux and Chauvet are both closed to the public). 
These presentations are in partnership with the SIUE Office of Educational Outreach, with technical equipment provided by the SIUE Meridian Society.  They are open to the public.




"Write Your Own Story" - MSCC ( 10:00 am - 11:00 am )

Main Street Community Center is offering a wonderful opportunity to write your life story for your family!  The “Write Your Own Story” class will be led by Center  volunteers throughout the year who will provide you with a choice of topics each week (e.g. your favorite childhood memory, your high school years, your first job, etc.).   You will choose a topic and write a page or two each time you attend the class.  Classes are not mandatory, but the more you attend, the more content you will have for your book.  You may start the class at any time.  The class will run every Thursday.  

Please bring a spiral-bound notebook and a pen/pencil – or a laptop computer.  Cost is $1/class.

Healthy Kids Day 2014 - YMCA ( 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm )

Edwardsville YMCA is hosting a free community event – Healthy Kids Day -  to help families “Build a Happier, Healthier Kid”.

Their goal is to inspire parents and kids to stay physically and intellectually active all summer long.

The Glen Carbon Police Department along with CADD (Communities Altering Destructive Decisions) and sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency will be hosting a Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative.

Bring your medications for disposal to Glen Carbon Village Hall front parking lot at 151 North Main Street, Glen Carbon, Illinois. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Accepted items include: Prescription medications, vitamins, over-the-counter medications, hormones, painkillers, and antibiotics Items NOT ACCEPTED: Hypodermic needles, intravenous solutions, mercury thermometers, hearing aids, oxygen tanks, or other hazardous household waste.

Required Equipment: Yoga Mat (ankle and wrist weights are optional)
Core-strength exercises strengthen your core muscles, including your abdominal muscles, back muscles, and the muscles around the pelvis.
