Paralegal assistance is offered monthly for seniors and the disabled in the greater Edwardsville area through a partnership with Land of Lincoln Legal Assisantance Program.

Dialogue With An SIUE Professor At MSCC ( 9:30 am - 10:30 am )

Winds of Change in the Middle East

On Thursday, May 23, from 9:30-10:30am, Abdullatif Hamad, Professor and Chair, Physics, SIUE, will present Winds of Change in the Middle East. Dr. Hamad will lead a discussion on the recent changes in some of the Arab countries and the current situation in Syria.  He will also analyze how these changes will affect the future of the area and, potentially, the world. 

These presentations are in partnership with the SIUE Office of Educational Outreach, with technical equipment provided by the SIUE Meridian Society.  They are open to the public.

"Write Your Own Story" - MSCC ( 10:00 am - 11:00 am )

Main Street Community Center is offering a wonderful opportunity to write your life story for your family!  The “Write Your Own Story” class will be led by Center volunteer Mary Diamond along with other volunteers throughout the year who will provide you with a choice of topics each week (e.g. your favorite childhood memory, your high school years, your first job, etc.).   You will choose a topic and write a page or two each time you attend the class.  Classes are not mandatory, but the more you attend, the more content you will have for your book.  You may start the class at any time.  The class will run through the second week in November.  Then, the books will be compiled for duplication and binding.  The books will make special holiday gifts.  Please bring a spiral-bound notebook and a pen/pencil – or a laptop computer.  Cost is $1/class.  Duplication and binding will be voluntary.

Computer workshops with Drew Ely will be a PowerPoint presentation with handouts. The advanced workshops will use laptops. Feel free to bring in your laptop, or use one of the ones provided for you.

Ageless Grace- MSCC ( 10:00 am - 11:00 am )

MSCC is pleased to announce that certified Ageless Grace instructor Lisa Beaumont will be teaching Ageless Grace at the Center on Friday mornings at 10:00am.  The Ageless Grace program “consists of 21 simple exercise Tools designed for all ages and abilities. These exercises, based on everyday movements that are natural and organic, focus on the healthy longevity of the body and mind. The 21 Tools have creative, imaginative names, so they are easy to remember. They are simple to do at home. The movements are designed to be performed seated in a chair, yet they can be done on a bed, standing near or behind a chair, down on the floor, or standing.  Almost anyone can do them, regardless of most physical conditions.”  Cost of the class is $5, with a FREE initial visit.

Coffee Talk At MSCC- We Honor Veterans ( 10:00 am - 11:00 am )

 

Main Street Community Center will host Kathleen Bott, RN, BSN, CHPN of SSM Hospice for a Coffee Talk on Friday, May 24, at 10am.  One out of every 4 dying Americans is a veteran.  Ms. Bott will discuss how hospice programs across the nation are assisting veterans with the challenges they may be facing from illness, isolation or traumatic life experience.


Coffee Talks are open to the public.  Suggested donation is $1.00.  Refreshments will be served.

Electronics Recycling At TheBANK Of Edwardsville ( 12:00 - noon - 6:00 pm )

As of January 1, 2012, the State of Illinois forbids electronics from going into the normal trash pick-up in our community. With the help of Web Innovations and Technology Services, Inc. (WITS), TheBANK of Edwardsville is offering an electronics and appliance recycling program. You can drop off eligible items at these bank locations (February thru November):

Glen Carbon Center / 157
4th Friday of each month
12:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Alton Center/M. L. King Drive –
1st Friday each month

O’Fallon Center
2nd Sunday of each month

Unacceptable items for recycling include tires, wood furniture, other wood products, paint and paint cans, and household and industrial chemicals.

There is a suggested drop-off donation of $5 each for computer monitors and laptops and televisions. For large appliances and all Freon-containing devices there is a $5 required fee. Everything else may be dropped-off free of charge.

As WITS is a not-for-profit, community agency in the greater St. Louis region, all donations of reusable items are tax-deductible and will be refurbished when possible and given to one of our programs such as Kids for Kancer, Free Computer Program or Veteran Technology. Designed to enhance vitality and a sense of well being, this Yoga workout will help participants gain improved flexibility, balance, strength and posture. Horseradish Festival In Woodland Park, Collinsville ( 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm )

The 25th Annual International Horseradish Festival will take place May 31-June 2 at Woodland Park in Collinsville.

Since 1988, the International Horseradish Festival has celebrated the multi-faceted and vastly under-utilized horseradish.
